Patpong Bangkok is one of the most famous red light districts in the world
let alone in Bangkok. It is made up of parallel side-streets, found between Silom Road and
Surawongse Road. Although still home to around 100 bars and gogo bars it has long since
been overtaken by the Sukhumvit areas of Nana Plaza and Soi Cowboy for those looking for
the sexier scene. The night market is now probably a bigger draw than the bars making it
perfectly acceptable for the thousands of female and family visitors who flock there every
year.
Because of the presence of the night market the sleazy feel of Patpong is far less
pronounced than it used to be. The bars and sex shows are still there but the main
attraction now is the myriad of stall and hawkers attracting the tourists looking for that
elusive bargain. In reality you are unlikely to find it as Patpong market prices are higher
than almost all other markets in Bangkok due to the fact that the customers are almost
exclusively tourists. It is however a great atmosphere (different to the Thai markets) and
certainly a lot of fun.
If you are visiting Bangkok for the first time then Patpong should definitely be on your
must do list!
